The PIP was initially started by the NFU in recognition of a need to develop the skills and broaden the knowledge of young people already working within the poultry industry. Partnered by ABN from the beginning, the programme is now in its fifth cohort and continues to help to develop participants careers as future industry leaders.

The programme is made up of a series of events spanning over 12 months, offering participants a unique insight into the industry as well as creating networking opportunities with other likeminded poultry farmers and industry specialists and ultimately supports a brighter future for the British poultry supply chain.

MEET THIS YEARS COHORT

session 1

PIP LAUNCH AND MEDIA TRAINING AT NFU HQ

The cohort kicked off their PIP journey with an engaging two-day induction at NFU headquarters. The group was welcomed by NFU President Tom Bradshaw and Poultry Board Chair James Mottershead. Sessions included insights into the NFU’s work, social media strategy, and a hands-on media training workshop focusing on both radio and TV interviews. Participants practiced the ABC technique and discovered new skills in communication and broadcasting.

Hook Hatchery, ABN’s Flixborough feed mill, and 2 Sisters Food Group’s Scunthorpe processing site. Participants gained first-hand insight into hatchery biosecurity, feed production at scale, poultry nutrition, and poultry processing innovations.

Session 3

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AT NFU HQ

The group returned to NFU HQ for a full day of leadership training with coach Alistair. Topics covered included SMART goal setting, the difference between management and leadership, leadership styles, and Belbin’s Team Roles. Through self-assessments and group exercises, participants gained valuable insight into their own leadership approaches and how to motivate and manage effectively.

session 4

FARMERS FOR SCHOOLS TRAINING

Delivered by the NFU’s Farmers for Schools team, this session prepared participants to deliver presentations in schools about farming and food production. Attendees created personalised presentations using the ‘Me in Three’ and ‘Farming Fact Check’ formats, with emphasis on storytelling, visuals, and interactive props. The training helped participants build confidence to educate and inspire the next generation.

mEET DR LAURA FALLER

Dr Laura Faller

Meet ABN Poultry Nutritionist, Dr Laura Faller, who was part of the 2022/2023 NFU Poultry Industry Programme cohort.

Coming from an academic background, Laura didn’t have the lifelong connections or experience of the wider industry, so joining the programme has provided Laura with a unique insight into the industry as well as creating contacts with other poultry farmers and industry specialists.

“I was excited to be a part of the 22/23 PIP! The programme gave me the opportunity to meet other people of a similar age from different areas of the industry, forming new networks and creating some good working relationships,” she says.

“With many of the challenges and opportunities that the industry faces, it is important to be able to work with peers from all areas to solve challenges and support the industry in years to come.”
