Feed Safety & Quality Standards

At ABN feed safety is at the heart of everything we do. Our aim is simple, to produce high quality products that perform on farm, meeting all legal, required and expected feed and food safety standards from raw material to delivered finished feed.

The feed safety and quality standards within ABN are managed by our quality teams, who are part of the technical and assurance function.

All ABN manufacturing sites and central functions are:

  • Certified to the Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS)*
  • Hold active HACCP (Hazard Awareness of Critical Control Points) study
  • Trading Standards approved
  • VMD (Veterinary Medicines Directorate) approved

*A copy of our UFAS assurance status is available via the AIC website – Assurance Checker, or follow the links at the bottom of this page.

Quality Assurance

At ABN, Quality Assurance (QA) is the total of arrangements made to ensure that products will be of the quality and safety required by their intended use. These include: supplier assurance of raw materials and procurement, diet specification, formulation and all manufacturing and delivery stages. We operate an ‘open door’ policy with our customers and are happy to discuss and supply tailored reports showing nutritional, physical and microbiological information. These can be supplied on a regular basis or ad-hoc as situations demand.

Quality Control

At ABN Quality Control (QC) is the part of QA concerned with inspection, sampling and testing against specification and procedures, which ensure that the necessary and relevant tests are carried out and results assessed against the proper specification.

By monitoring all raw materials that are used in the mills and the quality of the finished feeds we produce, we can deliver the correct nutritional package to our customers. We test in excess of 100,000 routine samples annually for raw material and finished product analysis, as well as microbiological testing. Using this data we can confirm that the feed we supply, as well as our plant environments, are bio-secure and ensures that we consistently deliver safe, hygienic, high quality feed to our customers.

We produce regular quality reports for internal use and for our customers, giving them complete visibility of the quality of the feed their livestock are eating, and demonstrating the consistency of the product we manufacture. The quality control team look after various aspects of due diligence testing, to help maintain our status as a legally compliant business and meet the requirements of UFAS.

Accreditation

This is determined by the management of legal and industry related compliance within ABN’s compound feed sites, through various legal, accreditation and customer bodies such as AIC (Agricultural Industries Confederation), FAR (Feed Advisory Regulators), UFAS (Universal Feed Assurance), VMD (Veterinary Medicines Directorate) and Feed Hygiene Regulations (Trading Standards).

By working closely with the different functions across ABN from supplier and raw material approval, customer services, formulations, operations, and haulage we are able to demonstrate our compliance by routinely undertaking internal process system and hygiene audits as well as plant and equipment validation exercises at each site. This enables us to document and demonstrate our compliance within these established standards and guidelines across our business.
