Feeding to control egg size to meet market demands

With the market now generally demanding a smaller egg size than in the past as consumers look for ways to reduce food costs, the impact of feeding on egg size or weight has become an important topic.

There are a number of feed-related factors that need to be considered when trying to produce smaller eggs more consistently, and the key to success is broadly twofold. Firstly, aim to promote a rapid increase in egg weight in early lay so that the necessary profile of egg grades in relation to market requirements is achieved quickly, and then try to prevent excessive increases in egg weight thereafter.

Crucially, this must be done without compromising egg production.
